Undocumented Migrant Women in Turkey and Social Services
This paper deals with the popular phenomenon: feminization of migration. Social, economic or obligatory reasons leading people to migrate to another country might put them in a disadvantaged position. And regarding this disadvantageous position, it is not possible to mention translation services, legal support, access to individualized health and education services in Turkey.
In this case, this paper focuses on the position of undocumented migrant women and refugee women in Turkey’s migration regime, and their needs in terms of social work from a gender perspective. Gender does not only determine women migrants’ participation in the labour market, but also their daily practices, especially when it combines with being undocumented. Undocumented women migrants and refugee women are exposed to gender-based discrimination and sexual harassment while they work in most insecure conditions. Based on existing literature, this paper aims to show the practical and legal obstacles that prevent undocumented migrant women from accessing social services, and the importance of social work for this group.
To fight against the abuse that migrant and refugee women face in both the public sphere and in private properties, preventive precautions and policies have been recommended presenting the international conventions that Turkey has signed as reference.
